The 1965 single beat Elvis Presley’s ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ into second place in a survey for Uncut magazine. August 4th 1901, Born on this day, Louis Armstrong, singer, bandleader, trumpet. Had many hits including the 1964 US No.1 'Hello Dolly!', 1968 UK No.1 'What A Wonderful World’ plus ‘When The Saints Go Marching In’, ‘Ain't Misbehavin’, and ‘We Have All the Time in the World.’ Died 6th July 1971.

4th Aug 1967, Aretha Franklin released her twelfth studio album Aretha Arrives on Atlantic Records. It’s only single release was “Baby I Love You”, a million-selling No.1 R&B hit. The sessions for the album were delayed because Aretha shattered her elbow in an accident during a tour. She decided she was ready to record before her doctor thought she was fit and ready to return to work.

The sessions for the album were delayed because Aretha shattered her elbow in an accident during a tour. She decided she was ready to record before her doctor thought she was fit and ready to return to work.

4th Aug 1967, Pink Floyd released their debut album The Piper At the Gates of Dawn on which most songs were penned by Syd Barrett. In subsequent years, the record has been recognised as one of the seminal psychedelic rock albums of the 1960s.

August 4th 1975, Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant and his wife were both badly injured when the hire car he was driving spun off the road and crashed on the Greek island of Rhodes. Plant smashed both his ankle and his elbow, and was not fully fit for the best part of two years. A forthcoming North American tour had to be cancelled.
