September 12th 1952, Born on this day, Neil Peart, drummer, Rush, (1980 UK No.13 single 'Spirit Of Radio' 1982 US No. 21 single 'New World Man'). Peart was made an Officer of the Order of Canada on May 9, 1996. The trio was the first rock band to be so honored, as a group.

Arriving in record stores today in 1975, wrapped in opaque black plastic, was Pink Floyd's latest album, Wish You Were Here. As a (fairly reluctant) concession to the record company and retailers, a sticker - designed by Hipgnosis artist George Hardie - was added to the cover, depicting the elements and including the artist and title, alongside the handshake.

Happy birthday Tommy Roland Shaw (born September 11, 1953)...an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, and performer best known for his work with the rock band Styx. In between his stints with Styx, he has played with other groups including Damn Yankees, Shaw Blades as well as released several solo albums.

11th Sept 1970, NME’s Keith Allston interviewed Jimi Hendrix in England. The interview turned out to be Hendrix's last; he died a mere seven days later. During the interview, Hendrix talked about a new musical phase, with planned collaborations with Miles Davis and Paul McCartney.

11th Sept 1948, Born on this day, John Martyn, (Iain David McGeachy), singer, songwriter, guitarist, who had the 1973 album 'Solid Air'. Martyn died in hospital on 30th Jan 2009 in Ireland at the age of 60. The folk, blues and funk artist was widely regarded as one of the most soulful and innovative singer-songwriters of his generation and had been cited as an influence by artists as varied as U2, Portishead and Eric Clapton.

The following day, The Times printed a reader's letter that said: "The hypnotic rhythm and the wild gestures have a maddening effect on a rhythm loving age group and the result of its impact is the relaxing of all self control." The film was quickly banned in several English cities
